DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Flags flew at half-staff in Iowa on Friday in honor of Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson.

Petty Officer Tumilson, formerly of Rockford, was killed in action on Aug. 6, when a Taliban rocket-propelled grenade shot down a helicopter with 30 Americans on board, including Tumilson and 21 other Navy SEALs.

The 35-year-old was posthumously given the Purple Heart and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Memorial services for Petty Officer Tumilson were held on Friday. KWWL was invited by the family to attend the funeral. We'll bring you parts of the service in memory of Petty Officer Tumilson on the KWWL News at 5.

The flag flown over the State Capitol on Friday will be given to Petty Officer Tumilson's family at a later date, along with a proclamation honoring him. Gov. Branstad also attended the funeral.
