Cooler asphalt being spread in Iowa City

A more environmentally friendly asphalt will be spread during the resurfacing of an Iowa City street.

It's a cooler product because an additive lets the asphalt be kept at least 30 degrees lower than normal which results in less energy being used.

LL Pelling Co., of North Pelling, will be laying the asphalt starting Tuesday.

Carrie Herrera, who handles marketing for LL Pelling, says the additive has never been used before in warm mix asphalt in the United States.

The organic additive was developed in South Korea.

The cooler mix of asphalt costs the same as the conventional hot asphalt but gives off fewer fumes and also cools sooner so streets can be reopened more quickly to traffic.
