Older people who burn more calories have greater mental fitness

Older adults who burn the most energy have a lower risk for mental decline.

Researchers at the University of Florida used lab measurements, rather than memory recall, to figure out how much energy older adults burned during the day.

Nearly 200 people participated.

They found those with the highest energy expenditure had a 90 percent reduced risk for cognitive impairment.

Researchers say exercise isn't the only way to use energy. Keeping yourself active, like running errands or doing housework, also burns calories.
