New study shows autism risk within families

Parents of children with autism often ask their pediatrician about the risk of having another child with the disorder, now doctors finally have an answer.

A new study in the journal Pediatrics finds an infant with an older sibling with autism had a nearly 20% risk of developing the disorder.

Male infants, and those with multiple siblings with autism, had a roughly 30 percent risk of autism.

Experts hope to use this information to identify kids at the highest risk for autism, and start treatment as soon as possible.
