Pawlenty drops out of race

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty announced Sunday morning he is dropping out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Pawlenty finished a distant third at Saturday's Straw Poll in Ames, with only 14% of the vote. Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann took the lead in that race, coming in with 29% of the vote. Congressman Ron Paul came in second with 28% of the vote. Paul was only 152 votes behind Bachmann.

Pawlenty spent nearly two years laying the groundwork for his campaign. He had said he needed a strong finish in the Straw Poll to continue the campaign.
