Bachmann wins straw poll

It could be the end of the road for some GOP candidates while others are getting a much needed boost. That boost will go to Iowa native Michele Bachmann. Bachmann won the straw poll beating Ron Paul by about 150 votes. Also, finishing strong are Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum. Not everyone appeared in Ames. The 2007 winner Mitt Romney did not attend nor did Jon Huntsman.

A group photo... the last time these candidates stood together in Ames. Moments later, it was time to tell Iowa Republicans why they're the right candidate for president... beginning with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

Rick Santorum, (R) Presidential Candidate says, "This is the 'little engine that could' campaign."

Trailing in the polls, Santorum reminded Iowans that he wrote the bill banning partial birth abortions. And, flanked by his family, told Republicans he stood up for traditional marriage in Congress. Congressman Ron Paul is a doctor. And, he says, he has a 'prescription' for the country.

Rep. Ron Paul, (R) Presidential Candidate says, "It's time to restore freedom in America."

How? By, in Paul's words, getting government 'off our backs' and 'out of our wallets.' Paul also wants American troops to come home... and invest the trillions spent on wars abroad in the economy. Tim Pawlenty admits it won't be easy, but he says he's ready.

Tim Pawlenty, (R) Presidential Candidate says, "You can take it to the bank, I will lead the country to a better, brighter, stronger place."

Pawlenty says he's done it as governor of Minnesota... cutting the budget, building the economy, and reforming health care, quote "the right way." Fellow Minnesotan Michele Bachmann touted her Iowa roots on her road to the White House.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, (R) Presidential Candidate says, "Everything I needed to know I learned in Iowa."

Like respect for life, traditional marriage and the family. Congressman Thad McCotter is focused on the future. He believes big government can't continue because too much damage has been done by Democrats.

Rep. Thad McCotter, (R) Presidential Candidate says, "This generation has a choice... focus on the jeopardy, or seize the opportunity."

McCotter says self-government will offer freedom that Americans deserve. Former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain knows how to run a business. And, he says America is in the middle of an economic crisis.

Herman Cain, (R) Presidential Candidate says, "Uncertainty is killing this economy. And as long as its killing this economy, it's killing this country."

His solution? Lower income tax rates, reduce capital gains to zero, and make them permanent. Six candidates on stage, three more on the ballot. A crowded field that's sure to get smaller after the Straw Poll.>>
