Eating processed meat may add to risk of diabetes

Eating processed and red meat increases the risk for type two diabetes, according to a new study by Harvard University researchers.

The study looked at medical data from more than 200,000 men and women who were followed for at least ten years.

They found eating a two ounce serving of processed meat, like hot dogs or bacon, every day increased the risk for diabetes 50 percent.

The researchers say the high sodium and nitrate content in meat might be behind the increased risk. They say substituting nuts, whole grains and low-fat dairy for some of these meats may lower the risk.
