Neighbor speaks out about Rockford fallen soldier's life

Rockford residents are still trying to make sense of what happened to one of their own.

The town seemed quiet and slow on Monday, with American flags set at half-staff.

Friends and neighbors said they knew Jon Tumilson had a dangerous job, but they were not prepared for the news they received during the weekend that he was among the 30 Americans killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Friday.

Friends and neighbors describe 35-year-old Tumilson as a caring, hardworking individual who they grew up with and watched grow into the person he was.

"He was a good kid, growing up. I knew him ever since he was born and grew up here in Rockford, and he would ride his little ATV's down here and tear up my pasture, and he helped me put my ceiling in my shop when he was a junior in high school," neighbor Mark Biggs said. "If you asked him to help, he was always there."

Tumilson's family didn't want to talk on Monday, but they have a flag flying at half-staff at their home.
