Gilbertville Area Veterans Memorial Committee plans new addition

Every branch of the military is represented at the Gilbertville Area Veterans Memorial.

Since its dedication about two years ago, many people have visited the park.

"Everyday you see people here talking about the park. They're so in love with it," Linda Freet, chairwoman of the Veterans Park committee, said.

She said at least 13 other communities have contacted her for information and advice for their veterans memorial.

The Gilbertville Park isn't finished yet.

A statue in honor of all the women who've served our country is being added.

"We don't think the women have received enough credit for what they've given for their country so we're commissioning a statue of a woman soldier," Fleet said. "She'll be in combat dress. We're raising funds now. We can't order her until all the funds are raised, but we've got a good spot ready."

The statue will be put near a gazebo in the Veterans Park.

More pavers and bricks are also getting added in support and memory of our service members.

"People can order bricks at anytime. We have order forms throughout the town. The post office, city hall," she said.

Freet said the memorial moves many visitors to tears, and it's definitely a source of pride for the community of Gilbertville.

"It's beautiful. It's serene. It says how much pride we have in our country, in those who've given so much for us. It's worth a visit," she said.

If you'd like to make a donation to the Gilbertville Area Veterans Memorial and the efforts to get a statue of a female soldier, funds can be sent to the Gilbertville City Hall.

Something interesting to note about the statue, it will be modeled after an actual female veteran from Gilbertville.
