Ackley teen remembered with memorial golf tournament

This month marks the five year anniversary of the murder of an Ackley teen.

18-year-old Treye Blythe was murdered in August 2006, stabbed in the chest on a Cedar Falls street. Joseph Johnson of Waterloo is serving a life prison sentence in Blythe's death.

Friday, more than 100 people brought out their clubs to remember the teen who died just weeks before starting his college career at Hawkeye Community College.

Teams teed off around 9:30 in the morning at the fourth annual Treye Blythe Tournament in Ackley.

This year $57,000 was raised. The money benefits local causes in Ackley and nearby Wellsburg. It brings the 4-year total to $177,000.

Family members say it's all to honor a man just trying to make things right and be there for his friends.

In addition to the golf tournament and dinner, an auction helped raise money.

It included signed memorabilia from Drew Brees to Hayden Fry, Aaron Kampman and others.
