IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa City Police made several drug busts at the Tiffin rest stop on Interstate 80 eastbound Thursday.

At 10:30 a.m. officers approached a vehicle driven by Maxwell Weinger, 20, of Royal Oak, Michigan.  After Weinger consented to a search of his car, officers found about seven grams of marijuana and a marijuana pipe in the trunk.  Weinger admitted the items were his.  He is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

At the same time, other officers approached another vehicle driven by Erica Rae McClure, 18, of Berkely, Michigan.  Officers saw drugs in the vehicle and McClure admitted to smoking marijuana the night before.  Officers determined that she was still under the influence of marijuana.  She is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated or drugged.

Than at about 12:40 p.m., officers saw a truck pull into the rest area and park.  Officers say the people in the vehicle did not get out for several minutes and were parked several hundred yards from the building.  When officers walked up to the vehicle, they say they smelled an odor of burnt marijuana.  After searching the vehicle, officers say they found several ounces of marijuana, scales, packaging material and smoking devices.  David Joseph Carter, 23, and Barbie Ann Klein, 25, both of DeKalb, Illinois, were arrested and charged with a controlled substance violation and possession or distribution of a controlled substance without a tax stamp.

Lt. Doug Hart of the Iowa City Police Department says all of these arrests were part of a drug control effort along Interstate 80.  He says more people were arrested, but paperwork is still being processed.  He adds that officers confiscated about 9 to 10 pounds of marijuana along with several hits of acid.
