Popular WMT radio personality Leo Greco dies at 89

Leo Greco has always been known as an entertainer.

From his years in his nationally known band, to his popular WMT radio "Variety Time" program  that attracted thousands of Eastern Iowa listeners for more than 30 years on Sunday mornings.

"Sunday mornings in Iowa are going to church and listening to Leo Greco on the radio," said Andy Petersen, radio personality at WMT.

But for those closest to Greco, they say his legacy is so much more.

"Leo expected excellence. He had a very high standard that he expected of himself and also that he expected of those around him," Petersen said.

Petersen describes Greco as a genuine leader, working to make everyone around him better.

Leo was always over-prepared.  He very much believed in that strong work ethic."

Along with his professionalism, many who knew him say it was Greco's generous spirit that stood out.

Greco always made it a priority to help others, like his support for Charlie Becker and Camp Courageous in Monticello.

"Along with going out and raising funds for the camp, he made a lot of people aware of the camp and what a wonderful opportunity it was for people with disabilities," Becker said.
