Retired teacher passing on volunteer message

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Marilyn Young volunteers her time at the general store at Newaldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls. But helping people isn't a new thing for her, in fact it has happened all her life.

"The first time it happened dad came home with a young boy. Dad felt he wasn't getting fed properly so he decided to take him and teach him how to be a good farm boy and he came to live with us," Marilyn Young, Volunteer

And that helping attitude motivated her to pass the message on to her five children.

"They always said never leave home because your bed won't be available when you come back because someone else may be sleeping in it. That happened a lot."

This retired teacher admits volunteering is a way for life for her, but she says really anyone can do it.

"I think a lot of people are afraid they won't do it right or that they will feel too busy. I had a college professor tell me once is you are never too busy to do something you want to do."
