Solon whips Marion 11-2 for spot in 3A baseball title game

The Solon Spartans batted around in two different innings as they dispensed of the Marion Indians 11-2 Friday afternoon at Principal Park. The Spartans have now secured a place in the 3A Championship Game Saturday at 6 p.m against Harlan.

Ahead 4-0 already entering the top of the fourth inning, Marion starting pitcher Levi Lochner got two quick outs against the Solon offense. Four straight Spartans then reached base with singles from Derrick Loveless, Shawn Olson, and Brandon Shulista, with an error mixed in between. Lochner was taken out of the game with the bases loaded after the Shulista RBI-single. Ryan Butler had an RBI-single and Austin Dall added an RBI-double before the inning came to an end.

Marion (27-17) got on the board in the sixth inning after back-to-back singles by Mitch Wagner and Zach Nielsen. Andrew Charipar plated both runners with a two-run single off relief pitcher Nick Day.

Day had come in to replace starting pitcher Ryan Butler (8-1) with one out in the sixth inning. Butler pitched five and one-third innings and struck out five batters. He allowed four hits and was charged with both earned runs.

Solon (38-4) scored three more runs off three different Marion pitchers in the seventh inning. The runs came on RBI base hits by Loveless and Tyler Smith. With Loveless stealing second base, the catchers throw went into center field and Marshall Koehn came in to score.

Lochner (6-1) was charged with the loss for the Indians. He pitched three and two-third innings and allowed eight runs (four earned) on nine hits.

Wagner went 3-for-4 for Marion with a stolen base and a run scored. Every Solon starter recorded at least one hit. Koehn, Loveless, Smith, Shulista, and Butler had two apiece. Austin Dall went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI on the afternoon.
