Heavy rains force pumping of wastewater into storm sewer

The heavy rains that hit Dubuque on Wednesday and Thursday forced the pumping of untreated wastewater into storm sewers.

The city says they were forced to pump the untreated wastewater into the West Locust Street storm sewer to keep sewers from backing up into more homes.  That storm sewer drains directly into the Mississippi River.

The bypass ended at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday when tankers arrived to haul the wastewater to the City of Dubuque water pollution control facility.

Officials say another sanitary sewer overflow happened on Thursday in the alley behind 2415 Kerper Boulevard, due to overloading in the Kerper Boulevard sanitary sewer lift station. They say that overflow ended shortly after midnight.
