Cedar Falls to send partially treated wastewater to Cedar River

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The City of Cedar Falls says it will begin sending partially treated wastewater into the Cedar River on Sunday in order to make repairs to a pipe.

The water will be sent from the Water Reclamation Facility directly to the river from Sunday through Wednesday.  Bad weather and other construction complications could mean the water would be sent to the river for a longer period of time.

Contractors discovered a leaking 18 inch pipe on July 22 while building a new disinfection facility.

The city says the only way to safely make the repairs is to shut down a settling tank to relieve the pressure within the pipe which requires sending the partially treated water to the river.

The water will enter the Cedar River about 1400 feet downstream of the Main Street bridge and will have passed through 60% of the normal treatment processes.

This bypass is expected to have only a minimal, short term impact on the Cedar River.

Anyone with questions can call the City of Cedar Falls Water Reclamation Division at 273-8633.
