Fort Dodge stops defending 4A Baseball Champion CR Kennedy 2-1

Behind a two-hitter by Will Kenny on the mound, the Fort Dodge Dodgers knocked off the defending 4A champion Kennedy Cougars with a 2-1 win Wednesday night at Principal Park. The number seven-seed Dodgers advance for a semifinals game on Friday at 8 p.m.

Kenny entered the top half of the seventh inning with a no-hitter intact. After a groundout, he put Austin Benson on base with a walk. Terrell Sykes hit a ground ball back to Kenny who looked to start the game-ending double play. However, the speedy Sykes beat out a bang-bang play at first base to keep the Cougars alive. Austin Christensen broke-up the no-hit bid with a clean single into right field that put runners on the corners for Kennedy. Griffin Michael followed with a single of his own to plate the first Dodger run, while Christensen moved to third on the play. With the tying run 90-feet away, Kenny composed himself and got Devon Jacobus to fly out and end the game.

Kenny (6-4) allowed just two hits and one run in the complete game effort. He struck out five and limited the damage on six walks given up.

Kenny was responsible for one of the Dodgers (30-12) third inning runs as well with an RBI-single to break the scoring seal on the game. Will Gormally walked, with singles from Drew Arends and Alex Alstott to load the bases ahead of the Kenny base hit. Sam Edwards followed with a sac fly to give Fort Dodge the 2-0 lead.

For the Cougars (31-9), starting pitcher Christensen (7-1) pitched four innings and picked up his first loss of the season. He allowed just two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out three. David Yancey pitched a perfect final two innings for Kennedy with three strikeouts.
