Iowa City man charged with witness tampering

Iowa City Police say a man charged with burglary threatened a witness to the crime.

Police say that Michael James Shrock, 33, stole various items including a computer, vacuum cleaner, jewelry and tools from the home of a woman that died.  Police say Shrock knew the items were in the home because he had been there before.  Police also say a witness confirmed that Shrock did break into the home.

Police say some of the items were found in an apartment on Finkbine Lane.  A leaseholder for the apartment confirmed to police that Shrock had dropped off the items, but never came back.

Shrock was arrested and charged with second degree theft and third degree burglary.

A witness to the crime then told police on Monday that Shrock had contacted her about the incident.  According to police, Shrock pulled the victim's hair and told her that she knew exactly what to say and that her and his sister would figure it out together.  The victim told police she was scared that Shrock would physically harm her when he got out of jail.  She also said that she took the threat seriously and gave police false information to protect Shrock.

Shrock now faces additional charges of tampering with a witness or juror and third degree harassment.
