People in rich countries suffer from depression more than poor countries

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

People living in wealthy nations face an increased risk of depression.

Researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with more than 90,000 adults from 18 countries.

They found of the countries considered high-income, roughly 15 percent of participants said they've been depressed.

That's compared to 11 percent of people from low-income countries. Depression rates in the U.S. topped 18 percent.

The study did not look into why depression is more common in wealthy nations, but experts suspect high stress levels may be a contributing factor.
