3A State Baseball: Top Ranked Solon rolls by Waukon 11-0 in 5 innings

The Solon Spartans used a five-run third inning to run away with an 11-0 victory over the Waukon Indians Tuesday afternoon in a Class 3A first-round game at Principal Park. Solon, the Class 2A champions last year, will now move on for a 3A semifinals match up against Marion on Friday at noon.

Solon got on the board early with a run-scoring bloop-single by Shawn Olson in the top of the first inning. Derrick Loveless singled with one out and moved to second after Tyler Smith was hit by a pitch ahead of the Olson single.

Austin Dall added an RBI-single in the second inning to score Ryan Butler who had doubled to leadoff the frame.

The Spartans exploded in the third inning with five runs. Olson reached on an error followed by a walk to Brandon Shulista. Both runners were moved over on a Butler sac bunt. Dall reached on a fielders choice to load the bases, but Waukon pitcher Logan Wood struck out Travis Brimeyer for the second out. Back-to-back walks forced in two runs then Loveless cleared the bases with a three-run triple, putting Solon ahead 7-0 at the time.

Loveless finished the game 3-for-4, reaching base in all four plate appearances. He scored twice and had three RBI.
