Drunk driver injures two in hit and run crashes

One driver is at fault for multiple hit and run accidents in Dubuque County.

Dubuque County Sheriff's Department says 74-year-old Martin Hammerand was driving drunk when he hit two women, one having to be airlifted to a hospital.

The first accident happened at the intersection of Balltown Road and Haberkorn Road.

Authorities say Hammerand crossed the center line and sideswiped a vehicle driven by 16-year-old Holly Smith.  Her passenger, McKenzie Schmerbach, has minor cuts to her face and leg from flying glass.

The second accident happened just south of the first one.

Gretchen Furste, 59, was riding her bike when she was struck by Hammerand's vehicle.

She was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

Hammerand continued 2 miles south, lost control of his vehicle and went in the ditch.

He was arrested on various charges including operating while intoxicated, of which this is his second offense.
