SYSK: Derius Johnson takes pride in his work at the YMCA

Almost everyone at the Family YMCA of Black Hawk County in Waterloo knows Derius Johnson.

Derius is friendly, considerate and he's always got a smile on his face. He works in laundry service at the Y, washing towels and members' clothes.

When one of his regulars arrives, Derius already has his or her workout clothes ready to go.

For more than ten years, Derius has worked at the YMCA

You'll find him washing towels and folding towels, Monday through Friday from 9 to Noon.

"I just make sure things are up and going everyday," said Derius Johnson.

He's one of the Y's most dependable employees.

"He's always here. In the five years I've known him we have yet to get a phone call that says he's going to be late or he's sick or can't come in," said YMCA Finance Director Arlen Parrish.

"Because I care about what I do. Without this job I would feel lost, and very sad inside," said Derius Johnson.

The Waterloo native takes pride in his job in laundry service understanding he's here to help other people.

"The more you care, the more they'll want to come back to the Y and want to keep working out here and have a good experience like they always will," said Johnson.

The one thing you can't miss about Derius is his never-ending positive attitude.

"My positive attitude comes from my grandma who just passed away recently. She had always gave me a lot of positive energy and always taught me to be positive," he said.

It's hard to look at Derius' smiling face and not smile back. He clearly enjoys his job, and he takes pride in his work.

"It's what I look forward to every single day," said Derius Johnson.
