A former Belle Plaine and Iowa Hawkeye football player was severely injured in a rollover accident early Friday morning.

Iowa County Sheriff Robert Rotter says 24-year-old Kyle Spading was driving on Highway 212 about five miles southeast of Belle Plaine when his minivan rolled.

Rotter says Spading was trapped inside the vehicle.  He was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after he was freed from the wreckage.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

According to city officials, Spading resigned from his position as Director of Parks and Recreation in Belle Plaine earlier this month.

Spading played football for Belle Plaine High School. He was a tight end for the Hawkeyes from 2006 through 2009 but did not see any game action.  He earned a team leader award in 2008.
