UPDATE: Prayer Service following Luther graduates death

A prayer service will take place Thursday morning for a Luther graduate who was found dead in Nairobi, Kenya.

It will take place in the Recital Hall of the Luther Center for Faith and Life at 11 a.m.

College officials received word last Thursday of the death of Sylvia Nabukeera of Uganda.  Nairobi police believe she died June 24. She had a job interview June 21 in Nairobi. Friends were unable to contact her after June 21, when she was to travel back to Uganda. The Rev. Peter Ndungu identified Sylvia's body at a morgue. An autopsy is pending. Preliminary reports suggest she died from injuries inflicted by an assailant.  Two Luther faculty members are traveling from Tanzania to Nairobi to represent Luther in meetings with officials involved in the investigation of her death.

Sylvia worked at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in Minneapolis for the past year and was returning home to Uganda last month. A college press release says Sylvia had a job interview June 21 in N

At Luther she was involved in the Black Student Union, Diversity Center, Gospel Choir, BTQ (Beta Theta Omega: Women's Leadership Organization) and Student Senate. She planned to pursue further education and was committed to working in Uganda in a non-profit organization to help children facing hardships similar to her own childhood.

The Luther community is also offering support for her family. To provide financial assistance to the family, contact Luther College Ministries (telephone 563-387-1040, e-mail ministry@luther.edu), or Luther Diversity Center (telephone 563-387-1014, e-mail brownewi@luther.edu).
