Teenagers with deployed parents more likely to have drug, health problems

Teenagers with parents who are serving in the military may face an increased risk for mental and physical health problems.

Researchers analyzed surveys of more than 10,000 eighth, 10th and 12th graders.

They found female eighth graders with a deployed parent were more likely to be depressed.

Boys in each age group who had parents deployed long-term had an increased risk for binge drinking, drug use, and low academic achievement and had a lower quality of life.

Researchers say school-based programs that support teens with parents serving overseas should be implemented.
