Nicotine during pregnancy may affect baby's blood pressure for life
WATERLOO (KWWL) -
It's well known that smoking during pregnancy is harmful for the fetus, now researchers know some of the mechanisms behind nicotine's negative effect.
Researchers at Loma Linda University studied rats that were exposed to nicotine during pregnancy.
They found their offspring had an increased risk for high blood pressure. They also found nicotine triggered the formation of chemicals that permanently changed blood vessel behavior, which could have an impact throughout their lifetime.
