100 cattle die in heat

The dangerous heat and humidity this week, claimed the lives of dozens of cattle in far northern Iowa Tuesday.

On an Iowa cattle farm about 10 feet from the Minnesota border, an estimated 100 cattle died from the heat.

Two Minnesota fire departments were called in to help cool the cattle and were able to save most but not all of the livestock.

Veterinarians says in order to keep livestock alive in this heat, they first need to be kept out of the sun.

"And then plenty of access to fresh water and maybe water on them spraying, sprinklers, or sprinkling systems, misters," said veterinarian Dr. Tom Sautter.

Sautter says when livestock start over-heating, they begin breathing hard and will get wobbly or shaky.

It's a good reminder to watch out for any pets in this heat.
