English to be recommended as new fire chief

Cedar Rapids City Manager Jeff Pomeranz says he will recommend the city hire Mark English as their new fire chief.

English, who is currently the Interim Fire Chief, has been with the department for 25 years and worked his way through the ranks.

"He demonstrated outstanding leadership skills during the Flood of 2008 and as the Interim Fire Chief in the last few months. I am confident in his abilities to lead the department as it rebuilds flood-damaged fire stations and continues its excellent emergency response, education and prevention programs," Pomeranz said in a written statement.

English was selected from five finalists.  He began his second stint as Interim Fire Chief after Stephen Reid stepped down in February after less than a year on the job.  English was also Interim Fire Chief before Reid was hired when Steve Havlik retired.

Pomeranz will make his recommendation during the Cedar Rapids City Council meeting on July 26.

Pending City Council approval, English will be sworn-in on July 27, at 1:00 p.m. at the Central Fire Station, 1010 1st Street NW.
