Salvation Army needs fan donations

Fan requests are up at The Salvation Army and its supply is quickly depleting as a result of lingering high temperatures.

The Salvation Army says some families do not have air conditioning, and others may have it but are unable to use it because of the increase in energy costs.

"The summer heat can be especially dangerous for vulnerable populations like the elderly, households with young children or those with special medical needs," Director of Social Services for the Salvation Army Lindsay Hand said in a written statement.  "We want to reach out to those in the greatest need and make sure that they are assisted."

The Salvation Army is encouraging the public to "Join The Salvation Army Fan Club" by making a fan or cash contribution.  New fans are requested for safety reasons and box style fans are preferred.  Cash contributions earmarked for fan support are also welcome.  Donations can be made at The Salvation Army, 1000 C Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids.  Credit card donations can be made online.

Those interested in receiving a fan this year need to contact The Salvation Army to determine their eligibility and check fan availability.  There is a limit of one fan per household.  Call (319)364-9131 for more information.

The also offers its gym as a cooling center in Cedar Rapids.  It is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday when the heat index is projected at 95 degrees or warmer.
