Curb numbers not required by code

In response to a recent rash of people offering to paint house numbers on the curb, Cedar Rapids Police and Fire are reminding folks that it is not required by City Code.

According to officials, they have received many reports of people going door-to-door in neighborhoods offering to pain house numbers on the curb for a fee.  In some cases, it has been reported that these people have claimed that is a requirement by the fire and police departments. Greg Buelow, Special Projects Coordinator for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says this is false.

It is recommended that home owners have address numbers on their house that are at least four inches high and are a contrasting color to the house for maximum visibility.  Buelow also says that actual numbers are preferred over script lettering.

Buelow adds that you can choose to have your address numbers painted on the curb, but in the winter or if you have a vehicle parked in front of your home, those numbers could be blocked.

Buelow says you can also make your home easier to locate in an emergency if you have your house numbers on your mailbox.
