The Dubuque Community School District announced Tuesday morning the new principal for Fulton Elementary School.

The Board of Education approved Chris Nugent to become principal at Fulton Elementary School for the 2011-2012 school year.

She is replacing Jean McDonald, whom the Board appointed as principal at Sageville Elementary School following the firing of former Sageville principal Robert Burke, as he faces several federal charges related to child pornography.

Nugent has been with Dubuque Community Schools since 1989. She began her career as an elementary school teacher at Hoover and Fulton Elementary Schools. In 2003, she became the pre-kindergarten through 12th grade math coordinator, and in 2009, she became the lead instructional coach for the district.

Since 1997, Nugent has also served as an adjunct professor of curriculum and instruction in mathematics at Loras College.

She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Clarke College, a master's degree in middle level education from the University of Northern Iowa and is pursuing her doctorate degree in education, also at UNI.

Superintendent Larie Godinez said in a media release, "Chris's background in education as both a teacher and instructional coach, and prior connection to Fulton, make her an excellent choice. She knows the culture of the Fulton school family and is connected to the faculty as well. We are excited for her to begin this new leadership role."

Nugent will immediately begin to transition to her new duties.
