Car destroyed in suspicious overnight fire in Waterloo

An overnight fire destroyed a car that was parked in a Waterloo neighborhood.  The fire started around 1:00 a.m. in a private drive at the end of Virden St., near Highway 218.  Firefighters say the fire is suspicious and are investigating what caused it but are not ruling out heat at this point.

Firefighters had the flames out within minutes of arriving.  Prior to that, flames were shooting more than ten feet in the air and the fire kept making different parts of the vehicle explode.

Dozens of people watched on from surrounding windows as firefighters looked for clues in the devastated interior of the car after the fire.  The engine didn't look like it had sustained much damage.  No people were hurt and firefighters say the only problems they encountered in the heat was sweating a lot.

Police say the vehicle was registered to an address in Kalona. A few people in the neighborhood said they didn't recognize the car and didn't know who it belonged to.  Authorities also said they were having a difficult time tracking down the owner of the vehicle.
