Power outages leave hundreds in the dark

Not a good time to be without power with the excessive heat and that's the case in Iowa and Linn Counties Monday night.

Alliant Energy officials say a transformer at the Williamsburg substation failed around 4:30 p.m. About 930 customers in the area are in the dark, and could be until tomorrow morning before the lights are back on. Alliant says they are waiting on parts to fix the transformer.

Another 430 people are without power in northeast Cedar Rapids. Alliant says that was likely caused by a line down. Crews are currently working on finding the problem.

Two other communities were without power for a short time, and Alliant believes it's heat-related. Residents in West Branch lost power for an hour, while those in Hills were in the dark for about two hours because of an issue at the substation.
