The heat sends people to the hospital in Iowa's capital

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

The heat caused at least six people in the Des Moines area to seek medical help over the weekend.

The heat index measured well above 100 degrees throughout Iowa.

The top recorded temperature was 99 in Newton, Atlantic, and Council Bluffs.

Mercy Medical Center spokesman Gregg Lagan said at least two cases involved people who'd been drinking alcohol.

Lagan said drinking alcohol is a bad idea, because it dehydrates the body.  Best to stick with water or sports drinks.

A heat advisory remains in effect July 18.
