Waterloo hosts "Remembering Our Fallen" traveling display

To honor and remember Iowans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan, Iowa Veterans Memorial Hall in Waterloo is currently showing more than 70 photos from a traveling display.

"Give some comfort to the families by displaying their fallen soldiers," Mike Cros, a volunteer for "Remembering Our Fallen" display, said.

The Nebraska native set up the display in Waterloo.

"These are kids and they've given their lives for our country," he said.

Each board displays four fallen service members. There's a military photo and a more candid photo.

"I think people take for granted too much of the everyday life, and they don't realize the sacrifice not only these kids did but the families have given for our country, and it's too easy to forget that," Cros said.

Those from Eastern Iowa are front and center on the traveling display, including Specialist Travis Vaughn of Cedar Falls, Specialist Don Nichols of Shell Rock and Sergeant Seth Garceau of Oelwein.

Cros encourages everyone to see the display first-hand. He said it makes a bigger impact to look into the eyes of our fallen military men and women.

"It's hard to look at some of these pics and walk away without crying," he said.

The display is open to the public at Veterans Memorial Hall in Waterloo from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Wednesday, July 20.
