Ribbon cutting celebrates new Waterloo boat house

The new Waterloo boat house along the Cedar River is open for business.

Thursday, a ribbon cutting and open house showcased the facility.

It's built on the same location as the previous boat house that was flooded in 2008, but is much bigger and designed to weather a flood.

Officials say the basement is made so that if the river rises and more than six inches of water gets in, the flood doors open, making it more like a pier.

"Its interesting to watch how the rivers level went up and stop construction, and it makes you realize the power of the river, and it needs to be strong and that's the way we built it," said project manager, Larry Kurtz.

The upstairs can be rented out for gatherings and parties.

The project was primarily funded by Black Hawk County Gaming Association, Waterloo Rowing, FEMA and insurance funds.
