British Open like Iowa threatened by high winds

Organizers say some tees may be brought forward for the first day of the British Open to counter the strong wind threatening to cause havoc at Royal St. George's this week.

Gusts of up to 30 mph are forecast for Thursday's opening round, making some fairways unreachable off the tee for many players.

Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal and Ancient, says the par-5 No. 7 and the short No. 11, which is 243 yards from tee to green, are among the holes that could be modified.

Conditions should otherwise be easier than in the 2003 tournament at Sandwich, when players were critical that the rough was too thick.
