Disaster proclamation issued for Benton County

Gov. Terry Branstad has issued an emergency disaster proclamation for Benton County following Monday's storms.

In a release sent Tuesday, Governor Branstad says the disaster proclamation will help Benton County get state resources to help with the clean-up and recovery.

The National Weather Service says straight line winds up to 130 m.p.h. battered the county damaging homes and businesses, ripping apart trees and downing power lines.  The winds also blew semis off the road on I-380 near Urbana.

Officials say it could take up to a week for power to be restored in some areas.

The National Weather Service adds that east-central Iowa hasn't seen a wind event like Monday's since 1998.

The governor issued a similar proclamation for Tama County on Monday.
