UPDATE: Red Cross assisting those impacted by storms

The American Red Cross is mobilizing crews to help those impacted by Monday morning's storms.

Volunteers from the Grant Wood Chapter of the American Red Cross are providing clean-up kits and food for emergency crews and residents in Garrison and Vinton.

The Red Cross shelter in Vinton has been moved from the Vinton-Shellsburg High School to Tilford Elementary School at 308 E. 13th Street. Power has been restored to the elementary school and the Red Cross says the location will be better for delivering services to the community.

Residents in Garrison needing food and water may continue to get those at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 101 Walnut Avenue.

Volunteers from the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross will be assisting residents in Clutier and Garwin.

If you are evacuated to a shelter, you are asked bring essential items for each member of the family, such as:

  • Prescriptions and emergency medications
  • Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
  • Identification to show residence is in affected area and important personal documents
  • Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
  • Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
  • Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled

Also note that public health regulations do not permit pets in shelters, but service animals are permitted.
