"MacGyver bombs" cause fire atop Mason City mall

A fire started on top of Southbridge Mall in Mason City by "MacGyver bombs", which quickly burned out, according to police.

The explosives are made by combining liquid drain cleaner and another liquid into soda pop bottles.

Police say someone tossed the bottles onto the mall roof around 2:00 p.m. on July 9.

The explosives only created a small amount of damage.

The nickname "MacGyver" is a reference to the former TV show by the same name. The main character used inventiveness in making devices out of every day items.
