Music on the March in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Dubuque's own world-famous Colts Drum and Bugle Corps is hosting the 47th annual Music on the March Sunday evening in its hometown.

It's a drum corps competition that brings more than 1,200 people from all over the country to Eastern Iowa.

While the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps and the Colt Cadets may be on home turf at Dalzell Field next to Dubuque Senior High School, the musicians and executive director of 26 years Greg Orwoll know, there's really no place like home.

"We live on the bus all summer. There is no home," Orwoll said. "Every night we're on a gym floor, we're on a bus seat, we're driving somewhere. We sleep a few hours on the gym floor on a sleeping bag. We use the showers at the school, we rehearse, we do the show and we get up and go."

"Last night was a good night," euphonium player Erick Hollick said. "We rolled in about 3 am and woke up about 8. That's a good night, trust me."

He's from Tampa, Florida and joined the Colts in 2008.

"Being here four years, it's like my second home. I love it. I love it here," Hollick said.

For lead trumpet player Casey Hallahan, who grew up in Dubuque, Music on the March is truly a home show, especially after spending so much time on the road.

"Then we come back here to Dubuque. Stands are filled, people are cheering for you. You know half the people because I live here, and that's just great," Hallahan said.

The corps, in order of performance, are Dubuque's Colt Cadets; the Teal Sound from Jacksonville, Fla.; the Spirit of Atlanta from Atlanta, Ga.; the Glassmen from Toledo, Ohio; the Madison Scouts from Madison, Wis.; the Boston Crusaders from Boston and Dubuque's Colts.

More than 1,200 musicians, directors and volunteers will fill Dubuque with the power of music and marching Sunday night.

There are about 45 drum and bugle corps nationwide. The Colts organization has been around since 1963.

Music on the March begins at Dalzell Field next to Dubuque Senior High School at 7 p.m.
