Volunteers get down and dirty at the Arboretum

Posted:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The volunteers at the Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens may just be pulling weeds, but that's what helps make this place really shine.

"We try to not do too much weeding, but that's a big part of any garden, but when we can get out and be creative about our garden and new planting that's our favorite projects out here," said Mollie Aronowitz, director.

The arboretum was started in the mid 1990's by volunteers in the Cedar Valley.

"Just a group in the community wanted to have a beautiful green space for the community to enjoy so none of this would be here without the hard work and dedication of volunteers," said Aronowitz.

With just two full-time employees volunteers are always needed.

"It not only makes you feel good, but you are doing good. You are making someone else's day a lot easier and helping out," said Mark Lukasiewicz.

Lukasiewicz has volunteered for about five years. He says his family was on a picnic at the arboretum and by his next visit, he was a volunteer.

"God gave me a body so why not do as much as I can with it," said Lukasiewicz.

Making Lukasiewicz and the rest of these volunteers first in line when it comes to sprucing up this arboretum and garden.

The Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens isn't the only place that needs volunteers.
