Zach Johnson shoots 66, 3 shots back at John Deere

SILVIS, Ill. (KWWL) -

Zach Johnson began play at the John Deere classic with an uneventful front nine. He missed a couple of very makeable putts, and hit the turn at one under par.

But finally, Zach seemed to pick up some momentum on ten, sinking this birdie putt to go to two under.

Zach said, "It's certainly a testament to just not giving up. I've never done that. I grind, that's how I play the game."

And then he started to make his move Zach makes a birdie on 11 to go to three under.

And then on the short par four 14th Johnson would get up and down from the trap to go to four under.

And then the next hole, he makes the shot of the day chipping from the fringe. And Johnson said afterwards he was going right at this thing...And sure enough, the ball drops...

Zach shoots a five under 66 and finds himself three strokes back of the leader after round 1.

Johnson said, I'm encouraged. I mean I've been playing like this for a long time. It seems like the last few months. If I can just continue to put myself in position to make birdies, I'll be just fine."
