Eastern Iowa's Biggest Loser: Jan Phillis

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Jan Phillis is racing into her 50's full of joy and hope....But it wasn't that way just four years ago.

"I was convinced I was going to be a heavy person for life," Phillis said.

For most of her life, Jan's activities began and ended on the couch.

"I sat in front of the TV night after night, eating anything....thought I might stay this way forever," she said.

At her heaviest she weighed over 250 pounds and wore size 24 clothes.

"I didn't have the energy or self esteem to enjoy life," Phillis said.

There were two developments that changed the course of her health - a major surgery which forced her to view her weight issues up close and her son joining the Navy and getting fit before bootcamp.

Mainly by herself, Jan began to add to her activity level. And she also watched what she ate keeping her diet simple and logging every calorie in a journal. In a matter of months she lost more than 60 pounds and she was featured in a Mayo Clinic video as an example of how to commit to a healthy lifestyle.

And the woman who lived most of her life in fear is on another path.

"I feel unstoppable. You have to work to make dreams come true,  I'm living proof of that," Phillis said.
