Former Johnson Co. official's murder trial delayed

The murder trial for the former Johnson County emergency management coordinator has been pushed back to June.

Thomas Hansen, 70, is accused of shooting and killing his live-in girlfriend Sharon Gerot, 54, in May of last year.

Authorities say Hansen shot Gerot while she was riding a lawn mower in their backyard. He is charged with First Degree murder.

In July of last year, Hansen entered a written plea of not guilty.

The trial had originally been set to start last month but was moved to April. After a request from his attorney, his trial is slated for June 12.

Hansen previously worked for Johnson County from 1996 until he retired in 2007.

Before that, he worked for the Iowa City Fire Department.
