Eastern Iowa gas stations now carrying hard liquor

It has everything from fuel to snacks to now this.

While filling up on gas, customers can now stock up on the hard liquor.

Rural areas like Riverside now have their first liquor store in the form of the convenience store at the local gas station.

"This is one product that a lot of customers have been asking for here in Iowa," said Catherine Huggins, spokesperson for Kum and Go gas stations.

It's exciting news for many who had to drive out of town for such purchases beforehand.

"If we're having a weekend and we run out, we can just come to town to get something to drink or if you celebrating something, we don't have to go clear to Iowa City," said Lori Stuelke of Riverside.

But not everyone is as giddy about the new law.

Those involved with alcohol abuse treatment services say the law makes it easier for alcohol to end up in the hands of those it shouldn't.

"We get state funding to provide treatment and prevention for substance abuse to try to reduce the impact. This state law counters some of our initiatives," said Ron Berg, CEO of MECCA in Iowa City.
