DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A Dubuque man charged in the murder of his girlfriend pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Wednesday.

Teodoro Borrego, 52, was accused of the February 24 shooting of his longtime girlfriend, Shani Smith, 40.

Borrego fled the state after the murder and was arrested in Oklahoma City, Okla.  He was returned to Iowa on March 2.

Our news partners at the Dubuque Telegraph Herald say Borrego sat slouched between his two attorneys on Wednesday and responded with mainly "yeah", "yes" and "no" until it was time to explain what happened.

Borrego told the court that he walked into Smith's Kennedy Road home and saw her on the phone talking with another man.  He said from there he "lost it", and walked across the hallway to the garage where he knew a shotgun would be.

"Out of rage I grabbed it and shot her," he told the Dubuque County District Court during his plea and sentencing Wednesday.

Borrego pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.  He will be expected to serve at least 70 percent of that time.

"I really don't got much to say except I'm sorry for what happened," Borrego told the court. "I don't know what came over me ... 50 years is a long time, but I did what I did and I got it coming."
