Iowa Proud: Independence Biking

You've probably heard of RAGBRAI, but what about Independence's R.A.S.H. ride?

The city's annual cycling event is worth pedaling to town for.

Bill Versluis owns Bill's Smokehouse which is also the registration site for the 25 or 50 mile ride across Buchanan County.

The event encourages riders to stop every ten miles at various eateries and establishments to socialize with people in the community.

"We got together and thought we should put on a ride, and we do it here in northeast Iowa!" said Versluis.

The ride winds through paved roads and hills.  The entry fee supports the maintenance of the bike-friendly route.

"The money we raised goes to the Buchanan County Four Seasons Trails Association so it's benefiting the county," said Versluis.

"Its a great place to live, great place to have your kids, raise your kids, its just a great community, and the R.A.S.H. ride is the perfect example of that."

The annual event usually falls on the second Saturday of June.
