East football wins 7 on 7 tourney, advances to Washington D.C.

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The East High football team is already back on the field after reaching the playoffs for the first time in 19 years last season.  The Trojans recently competed at the Mel Kiper 7 on 7 tournament held in Marshalltown and came out with a regional championship.

The win qualifies the East squad to play in the 32-team national tournament held in Washington D.C. in 2 weeks.

They're currently in the process of practicing while also trying to raise the nearly  $10,000 needed to make the trip.

East High coach Kody Asmus says he's excited about the way his team's playing and also hopes his team will get to experience what he calls a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"We're going to do everything we can to give them this opportunity," said Asmus, "They've earned it.  It goes well beyond just playing 7 on 7 football for them to go to Washington D.C., to see the capitol, to see all the different buildings, monuments, and museums there would just be outstanding for them."

Senior Dominique Campbell agreed, "It would be a life changing experience, because I'm into politics.  I would love to see what's going on in Washington D.C.  It's be great exposure for Waterloo.  It'd be great to see a big picture other than Waterloo."
