Cedar Rapids to tear down parkade next week

The City of Cedar Rapids will begin tearing down the 1st Street Parkade on July 5.

The historic parkade was heavily demolished in the floods of 2008.  Efforts to save it because of it's spiral driveway failed last year.

Crews are removing the traffic lights from the skywalk and reinstalling them on a new post.  The skywalk will also be removed.

Once the demolition is complete, new curbs, gutters, sidewalks, lighting and river wall railings will be installed.  The lot will be stabilized with grass seed and the lot will not be available for parking in the near future.

D.W. Zinser Company is doing the demolition at a cost of $748,450.
